Detune-X "Purevil"

DETUNE-X begins as a solo “industrial/noise” side project of Stefano Rossello (:BAHNTIER//) and releases in the 2004 the first album "burnow!" on Rustblade. At the end of July 2007 DETUNE-X will release the new album "PUREVIL" but this is not the only news: change happened and at nowdays DETUNE-X become a duo project made by Stefano Rossello and Eric Van Wonterghem (SONAR, MONOLITH, INSEKT). The sound of "Pure evil" is industrial and incorporates hypnotic hard edge beats with grating precision percussion. Each track is a version of the same theme with refinements, additional sounds and samples. This release just crushes. Fast paced hard edge rhythms pulse out of the speakers, hypnotic and pounding to the last, with some really saturating loops that draw in the listener and fantastic hypnotic sounds coupled with crisp and harsh percussion like TERRORFAKT or SONAR but also some tribal part like THIS MORN OMINA or Ah Cama-Sotz. The new DETUNE-X project will play live in October at the Machinen Fest and in August at the"Two days of Schlagstrom" in Berlin. Originally set up by Bahntier frontman Stefano Rossello, Detune-X strikes back with a new line-up and a 2nd full length. Eric Van Wonterghem (known from Monolith, Absolute Body control, Insekt, Sonar ao) joined the project to inject all is experience. So you for sure will hear his industrial touch emerging from the rhythmic. There're some similarities with projects like Monolith and Sonar, but let's say that it rougher than Monolith and less distorted and powerful than Sonar. It might sound a bit repetitive, but some cool samplings add an ‘esoteric' touch to the composition. The title-song and “Microwar” are excellent illustrations of Detune-X' heavy style. If you really like the pure and hard style of industrial, “Embryoil” and “Demodex” will for sure catch your attention. There's a good evolution in sound (in comparison with the “Burnow”-cd) although it sounds less promising than it has been announced!

Detune-X begann als ein Solo Industrial / Noise Nebenprojekt von Stefano Rossello, dem ein oder anderen bereits bekannt von der Band :Bahntier//. Das Projekt veröffentlichte 2004 das erste Album "Burnow!", welches zu sehr positiven Reaktionen führte. Aus dem Solo-Projekt ist mittlerweile ein Duo geworden. Kein geringerer als Eric Van Wonterghem (Sonar, Monolith, Insekt) unterstützt Rossello nun bei Detune-X und führt das Projekt zusammen mit Rossello zu neuen musikalischen Höhen. Nach nunmehr 3 Jahren folgt mit "Purevil" der Zweitling des Projekt, der vor allem durch seine Dynamik und ungebremste Energie überzeugt. Purevil ist Industrial pur wie man ihn sich wünscht. Von einer hypnotischen Monotonie gekennzeichnet, wummern die Electro und Industrialklänge durch die Boxen und lassen das Tanzbein schwingen - Tribal Industrial, der von einer gewissen analogen Wärme zeugt. Anspieltips: Neisseria, Phototaxis. Fazit: Pflicht für jeden Industrial-Fan.

Born as a solo :Bahntier// side project, Detune-X with this new PUREVIL see the project become a duo thanks to Eric Van Wonterghem (Sonar, Monolith, Insekt). The twelve tracks of the album sound like a never ending party of industrial hypnotic sounds. Based mainly on rhythm variations the duo created a thick soundtrack like experience, blending rhythm layers, drones and some ambient solutions. Of the lot I preferred the tracks that had also some drones and samples because I like rhythm but when it become the main thing and the album turns into a modern tribal hypnotic experience I tend to lost my concentration but if you are into these sounds and you are picky about sound production, this could be the right one for you.

With the second full length Purevil , Detune-X double-up their manpower as mastermind Stefano Rossello is joined by Eric Van Wonterghem , man of many virtues, such as those named Klinik , Monolith , Sonar , Insekt . Stefano 's geometric patterns made of rusty beats, high-power electronic repetitiveness and euphoric BPMs get Eric 's treatment and, god, is a match made in heaven! Detune-X industrial remains highly corrosive and retains that pulsing impact that made the name heard in the first place, with Eric 's input quite instrumental in getting the sound out of that "small box" where it was confined in the debut album Burnow! (see review in Darklife Online v.X.2 of Oct 06). An additional touch of tribalism graces many tracks, which is a bit of a Monolith touch in a way. Many Monolith works have a hypnotic tribal feel and being Detune-X 's industrial pretty hypnotic, other than utterly pounding in the first place, Purevil is a monster work of modern rhythmic industrial that is a must-have, dance-to, get-lost-into for any respectable industrial head out there. An adrenaline fueled performance at this year's Maschinenfest festival showed that Stefano and Eric mean serious business and their visiting card is a very promising one indeed. Che Stefano Rossello sia un musicista instancabile è un'affermazione su cui nessuno potrebbe avere da ridire, difatti egli non si dedica soltanto al main project :Bahntier// (con in quale sta peraltro ottenendo lusinghieri e sempre crescenti successi…), ma si dà pure da fare con i Detune-X, della cui line-up è recentemente entrato a far parte il “guru” Eric Van Wonterghem. Quest'ultimo poi, non contento che la gente associasse il suo nome “solo” a band del calibro di Sonar, Monolith e Insekt (!!), ha visto bene di metter le mani anche sul progetto in questione, e dai risultati ottenuti direi che possiamo assai felicitarci di tutto ciò. Purevil è un platter che convince fin dal primo ascolto, e che si fa apprezzare sia per il suo dinamismo (qui si sta parlando di rhythmic-industrial-noise raffinato e curato nei minimi dettagli…) che per la sua grande varietà, dato che i brani sono piuttosto diversi l'uno dall'altro e non c'è mai il “rischio noia” in agguato. Davvero molto belle le stratificazioni sonore create dai due, che danno origine a ritmiche sì ossessive ma anche estremamente corpose e dense di sfumature, capaci di gratificare perfino l'ascoltatore più critico e schizzinoso. Non aspettatevi però troppi estremismi dai Detune-X, la loro musica infatti è abrasiva al punto giusto e non si trasforma mai in violenza sonora fine a se stessa, anzi sembra seguire sempre un filo logico e una direzione ben precisa. Insomma, se quello che volete è un disco “spaccaorecchie” allora questo non è pane per i vostri denti, ma se ciò che cercate è un sound lineare, definito, elaborato e soprattutto ricco di sfaccettature allora Purevil fa senz'altro al caso vostro.

Il secondo lavoro di Detune-X è più facile da interpretare, anche perché finalmente abbiamo scoperto che dietro a questo monicker agisce Stefano Rossello di :Bahntier//. Ma nessuno lo sapeva, così come nessuno poteva immaginare che questo come-back è stato realizzato con l'ausilio del veterano Eric Van Wonterghem, già all'opera con i mostri sacri Monolith, Insekt e Sonar! I progressi in fase di songwriting non si sono fatti attendere: "Purevil" rinuncia all'abrasività per dare spazio ad un sound più ipnotico, ossessivo e tribale, con reminiscenze di scuola Sonar (ovvio), Ah Cama-Sotz, This Morn' Omina ed Empusae. Ogni traccia dell'album non è altro che il continuo stravolgimento di uno stesso tema musicale, al quale vengono aggiunti sempre nuovi samples, beat e loop: ne esce fuori un disco pulsante, minimale e cerebrale, una sorta di concept che sembra voler seguire un filo logico ben preciso. Un brano come "Phatogen" potrà anche farvi ballare, ma non si scherza neppure con "Rotifer" (che sembra un prolungamento di certe cose di Monolith) e con "Embryoil", che potrebbe piacere anche a chi è abituato a farsi del male con Terrorfakt. Insomma, rispetto al primo lavoro Detune-X sembra aver trovato la giusta dimensione, un mondo che oggi oscilla tra le sonorità di marca Hands ed un certo tribalismo votato alla sperimentazione che ha sempre affascinato lo spirito creativo di Stefano Rossello. I cultori di queste sonorità si possono avvicinare senza timore, le idee messe sul piatto sono valide e non risultano mai banali. Avanti così Stefano!

Wenn sich die Krach Creme de la creme zu einem Projekt vereint, darf man sich auf Heidenlärm Güteklasse A freuen. Und wo „Purevil“ drauf steht, ist auch „Purevil“ drin: Moderne, vielschichtige und durchpunktierte Beats mit gelegentlichen rauen Tribal Percussions, treibendes Tempo, homogene, warme Distortion. Einigen mag innerhalb der 12 Tracks vielleicht noch zu wenig passieren, aber im Ritual Noise geht es darum, die Hörer in eine angenehme, progressive Hypnose zu versetzen und dort kommen gerade Eric van Wonterghems Erfahrungen mit Sonar besonders zur Geltung. Dass er und Bahntier Stefano Rossello ihr Handwerk verstehen, wird an der Qualität der Sounds deutlich, die allesamt mit (Fein)Gefühl übersteuert wurden und in komplexe Beatprogrammings integriert werden. Ja, verzerren muss erst mal gelernt sein! Toll sind auch die gelegentlichen Stahlpercussions, die natürlich an Neubauten und Krupps erinnern, dennoch steht die Detune-X Scheibe in den Händlerregalen neben den Hands-Releases, Dive, Sonar und This Morn’ Omina besser einsortiert. Die Beats gehen super ins Blut, sodass man bei der italienisch-belgischen Freundschaft jedenfalls von einem wahren Erfolg sprechen kann!
