Justin Gabriel Isaac Bennett, musician/producer of various electronic/industrial/ambient projects including The Implicate Order, Bahntier, EXP, Rozz Williams, and Professional Murder Music, who also currently plays as the live drummer for such acts as Skinny Puppy, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, and Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy, has unleashed a new project by the name of kETvECTOR. The project was born out of a series of jam sessions and electronic improvisations between Bennett and Stefano Rossello (Bahntier, Detune-X) which were recorded in Italy after a busy 2007 summer touring schedule with Skinny Puppy. The recordings were then assembled and produced by Justin in Los Angeles at his Implicate Order studio. The result is a truly innovative electronic flavored album that experimentally spans the genres of electro-techno-dance, along with break dub, and even finds itself at times in the realms of ambient symphonic psychedelia... all of course helped along by the drumming and percussive virtuosity of Bennett. An exclusive and international release for the Rustblade label by an artist currently garnering a rising appreciation from the public and critics alike. Are you ready for the trip?

Quello di Justin Bennett dovrebbe ormai essere un nome ampiamente conosciuto nel nostro Paese, non solo perchè l'esperto musicista americano è tuttora il percussionista live di nomi blasonati come gli Skinny Puppy, i My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult e persino il Peter Murphy solista ( voce dei riformati Bauhaus ), ma anche perché il Nostro è ormai implicato fino al collo nelle scorribande sonore orchestrate dal suo amico Stefano Rossello, nome di spicco del panorama nazionale e mente dietro al progetto :Bahntier//, e non è certo un caso ritrovare proprio Stefano a sua volta al fianco di Justin in questo nuovo act denominato Ketvector. Come ci illustrano le note ufficiali, il progetto in esame nasce da una serie di jam sessions ed improvvisazioni elettroniche tra Justin e Stefano, catturate in Italia all'indomani di un tour che ha visto il percussionista d'oltreoceano nuovamente impegnato con gli Skinny Puppy, ed in seguito assemblate e prodotte dallo stesso Justin nel suo studio privato a Los Angeles. Il risultato di tali incontri artistici fra le due menti in questione consta di dieci tracce (ottimamente prodotte) in cui i suoni levigati e scattanti dell'elettronica fanno da sfondo ad un lavoro prettamente ritmico e quasi interamente strumentale, nel quale Justin evidenzia una volta in più le capacità che gli sono valse tanti incarichi importanti in ambito percussivo. Tra suggestioni dub, sfuriate ritmiche in odore di breakbeat, squarci ambientali di difficile penetrazione e quant'altro, le dieci tracce di questa prima opera a firma Ketvector scorrono agilmente e senza intoppi, tra momenti di puro nervosismo ritmico ("A.U.M. Dose", "Spiral Script"), episodi dal retrogusto squisitamente etnico ("Ventitré", "E-Prime") e cupi frangenti industrial/ambient ("Immanentize The Eschaton"). Da segnalare anche il possente crescendo ritmico finale di "Metacognition" e gli alienanti sviluppi della title-track, che chiude l'album in maniera enigmatica. Un lavoro sapientemente prodotto da mani esperte che saprà soddisfare coloro i quali all'elettronica chiedono anzitutto una ricerca ritmica di livello superiore. (Roberto Alessandro Filippozzi)

Ketvector is a project between well-known producer and musician Justin Bennett (live drummer of Skinny Puppy) and Stefano Rossello ( :Bahntier//, Detune-X ). The result is quite complex electronic sound mainly characterized by a strong and dynamic rhythmic. The opening track “Genetic Archive” is a real great piece of music where industrial structures and trance vibes have been perfectly matched. Nearly the entire album remains instrumental, but the constant, energetic rhythmic and the cold sound sculptures make it quite fascinating. And yet, the “Metacognition”-cut featuring some vocals is for sure one of the other high lights of this album. This song is also a bit more Klinik-al sounding and reveals some cool sequences. There’s for sure a strong experimental touch from which you can’t get away when listening to this production, but the experimental style is fully accessible through the add of numerous other influences and arrangements. Ketvector perfectly fits to the sound of Rustblade!

Gli appassionati di electro-industrial sapranno che Justin Gabriel Isaac Bennet è il live-drummer dei seminali Skinny Puppy, ma avranno anche notato che ultimamente il suo nome è stato spesso collegato a quello di Stefano Rossello e ai suoi :Bahntier//, con i quali il musicista e produttore ha collaborato e si è esibito dal vivo parecchie volte. Non è quindi una sorpresa scoprire che questo nuovo progetto, dal nome kETvECTOR, è nato da una serie di jam sessions tra i due artisti, ai quali evidentemente non mancano le idee e la voglia di mettersi in gioco facendo cose un po’ diverse da quelle proposte in passato. In The infinite regress non troverete nulla di estremo o di difficile da mandar giù, difatti questo non è un disco “pesante” ma una raccolta di brani volti alla sperimentazione, quasi sempre caratterizzati da un incedere ritmico abbastanza sostenuto abbinato ad una componente noise-electro assai particolare, sofisticata e dall’effetto straniante. Il risultato di tale commistione è un insieme di composizioni interessanti, che coinvolgono soprattutto a livello mentale e che, grazie al loro dinamismo e la loro corposità, non annoiano mai l’ascoltatore inducendolo a intraprendere, con il solo pensiero, una sorta di viaggio trascendentale. Nel caso di un album del genere è inutile parlare di pezzi riusciti meglio o peggio ed è più sensato dire che il livello complessivo è piuttosto buono, perciò concludo aggiungendo qualche curiosità utile per i collezionisti: è probabile infatti che questi ultimi, al posto dell’edizione “normale” del cd, vorranno accaparrarsi quella limitata a centocinquanta copie numerate, che in più include alcuni gadgets e un mini contenente un paio di bonus tracks. Ein wenig musste ich schmunzeln, als ich mir das erste Mal "The Infinite Regress" zu Gemüte führte. Justin Bennett, seines Zeichens Liv e Drummer von SKINNY PUPPY, ist der eine Teil von KETVECTOR und was bei den zehn Tracks nun wirklich nicht zu überhören ist, ist die stilistische Ähnlichkeit zu DOWNLOAD (Das Nebenprojekt des SP Soundtüftlers cEvin Key).
So erwartet den Hörer auf rund 45 Minuten eine verschachtelte und vertrackte Reise durch den elektronischen Kosmos. Das Projekt KETVECTOR selbst ist bei einer Reihe von Jam Sessions und elektronischen Improvisationen zwischen Justin und Stefano Rossello, die beide auch zusammen bei BAHNTIER ihr Unwesen treiben, entstanden. Seien es nun Songs wie der beat- und drumlastige Opener "Genetic Archive", frickelige Tracks à la "A.U.M. Dose" und "Markoff Chaney" oder das beinahe geisterhafte/ beschwörende "Ventitré": Den Beiden gelingt es, ein spann endes und innovatives Album zusammenzustellen, welches in seiner Gesamtheit sehr viele Parallelen zu einem Soundtrack aufbietet.
Etwas sperriger und dadurch anspruchsvoller präsentiert sich dann "Immanentize the Eschaton". Eine eingängige Synthline, ange reichert mit leichten Klavierparts, schafft wiederum nur einen Track weiter auf "Metacognation" einen anregenden Gegenpart dazu. Dass im Hause Rustblade Teamwork sehr groß geschrieben wird, zeigt sich an der Tatsache, dass Eric van Wonterghem in seinem Pro dam Studio "The Infinite Regress" den letzten Schliff verpasste. Wer es vorher nicht weiß, wird spätestens nach ein paar Takten erkennen, dass Ketvectors „The Infinite Regress“ voll von der key'schen Schule der Frickelei steckt. Dabei hat Justin Bennetts großes Vorbild trotz beruflicher Nähe keine einzige Note zum Debütalbum beigetragen. Der Drummer von Puppy, Thrill Kill Kult und Peter Murphy nutzt geschickt sein Genre übergreifendes Rhythmusverständnis, um auf hybride Art und Weise mit Bahntier Stefano Rossello hypnotisierende Beatlandschaften zu kreieren, die selbst einigen Warp-Acts Konkurrenz machen. Intelligent gelayert und dabei dennoch mit minimalem (aber effektiven) Synthgeblubber auskommend, avanciert der Quantenmathematik-Freak Bennett zur technischen Elite im IDM & Co. So ein Bleifuß zwingt bei der Tempi-Jongliererei jede Bassdrum in die Knie. So treibend war IDM selten. Wer Download, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher schon immer mal auf Hyperspeed erleben wollte, wählt Ketvector.

A collaborative project from Stefano Rossello of :Bahntier// and Justin Bennett, who has worked in such acts as Professional Murder Music, EXP, and The Implicate Order, as well as playing live drums for Skinny Puppy and My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, kETvECTOR offers a debut album that's much less aggressive than you'd expect from either participant. Opening the album is "Genetic Archive," which hints at industrial influences only by the understated distortion of the pounding kicks; otherwise, the song is a perfect example of contemporary acid house with understated arpeggios swimming beneath a hypnotic beat. "Spiral Script" is likewise solid techno, the emphasis on the clattering rhythm of cymbals, and "Markoff Chaney" is spaced out electro interspersed with echoing ambient passages, with rhythmic springing sounds and whistles adding a more playful element that perfectly suits the song's title, an homage to the subversive prankster character in Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminatus! novels. By the second half of the album, Bennett and Rossello's more industrialized influences become more overt. "Immanentize the Eschaton," another track borrowing its title from Robert Anton Wilson, starts off as a rickety assemblage of percussive machinery sounds, whirrs, and slow gritty bass hits, then builds into a cacophony of liquid blurps and cheeps. "Ventitré" highlights Bennett's rhythmic talents with stately but epic drums reverberating over moody synth harmonies, and "Metacognition," despite an array of interesting elements like distorted spoken passages and eerie piano motifs, is most notable for its outro of snares and toms rolling rapidly over moaning echoes. An impressive intermingling of industrial and techno aesthetics, The Infinite Regress will appeal especially to fans of similarly-minded crossover acts like PlatEAU and Monolith.
