Xotox & Detune-X "We Are Deaf"

Andreas Davids and Stefano Rossello are two of the most important figures in the new electro-industrial global panorama; composers, producers, and dj's that for years have been hitting us over the head with their harsh audio assaults. With "We Are Deaf" they come together to construct an album of high quality and strength without compromise. Pure rhythmic noise and full-steam-ahead distorted bass drums battle together to attack us with a devastatingly powerful sonic impact, forcing our bodies into movement and testing the limits of our eardrums. Included in the album is an unexpected 10 minute jam session divided into two parts, rhythmic and then pure noise. A release aimed at alternative dance floors across the globe and rhythmic noise junkies alike... not to be missed!

"We Are Deaf" is an album featuring two bands active in the electro-industrial scene. We first have the famous Xotox project set up by Andreas Davids and signed on ProNoize. Next comes Stefano Rossello and his Detune-X project. We are all reminded of the excellent "Purevil"-album that he released together with Eric Van Wonterghem (Monolith, Sonar ao), but Stefano now went on as a solo-project (again). Each project composed two songs for this album plus two remixes from the songs of the other project. Last, but not least they made two songs together. Let's first concentrate on the German project that has used to serve us some real raw, merciless and quite power-noise like releases. Xotox here remains quite faithful to his sound, but I experience these cuts as more danceable and I dare to say club-friendly. The heavy electro-industrial opener entitled "Grenouille Mechanique" is a smasher. No foreplay here, but directly hard assaults of distorted sounds, heavy rhythms and female samplings. This is Xotox on its best! "Please Don't Encourage Me Anymore" is quite well crafted as well. Detune-X brings with "Toolsuck" a quite power-noise style while "My Beautiful Doll" is more into a mix of trance and industrial! Both pieces are perfect for the clubs. Then comes a remix of Detune-X' "Toolsuck" by Xotox, which is quite repetitive, but ultra danceable. The remix of Xotox' "Grenouille Mechanique" by Detune-X reveals great industrial sounds on top. Here again both artists did a real great job. The other remix from Detune-X (cf. "My Beautifull Doll") by Xotox has been driven by a furious and merciless rhythmic. The two last tracks have been composed by A. Davids and S. Rossello together. The "D.I.F. part1"-piece sounds like the offspring of industrial and dance. The kind shamanic rhythmic is simply irresistible and will leave you breathless. "D.I.F. part2" is less efficient, but you don't hear me complain when getting such a furious release! "We Are Deaf" could be the only right title for this album. Both artists did a real outstanding job!

Siamo sordi e non ci sentiamo, no. Il volume a palla, un rave ad iniezione sottocutanea e sberle in faccia: tante sberle in faccia. I due producer Andreas Davids e Stefano Rossello incrociano le loro strade con un dischetto di bombe a mano e missili terra aria, l'ultraviolenza hardcore del wall of sound tipo di Xotox ed il loop deflagrante, tribal-noise della macchina bellica Detune-X. Feedback a manetta, beat testardi e breaks ambientali per ravers fottuti nel loro viaggio. “Grenouille Mecanique” e “Toolsuck” sparano due mostri senza pietà: circolare ed incandescente la prima, più cerebrale e trippy la seconda. “Please Don't Encourage Me Anymore” introduce psichedelia del rumore da Officine Schwartz, che nel remix di Detune-X diventa se possibile ancora più oscura e deep. “My Beautiful Doll” è invece Alexander Kowalski con gli steroidi, roba da infartare on the dancefloor, senza neanche rendersi conto.
Xotox e Detune-X prima si affrontano, poi si remixano, poi si mescolano, infine si (ri)trovano nella loro reale natura, ad un passo dalla techno, appena svoltato l'angolo dell'industrial, così esageratamente loud e incazzati per i tempi che corrono e per la techno da brave educande che si fa oggi. A Roma si dice: "Robba forte."

Совместный альбом европейских нойз-индустриальных музыкантов Andreas Davids (XOTOX) и Stefano Rossello (DETUNE-X) в первой своей половине содержит жесткую, мощную и бескомпромиссно ритмичную музыку, которую можно описать как дистортированное клубное индустриальное техно, отсылающее слушателей к классическому power rhythmic noise лейбла ant-zen или harsh TBM лейбла NoiTekk. Здесь музыканты работали по отдельности. Агрессивные, плотные и не такие примитивные, как может показаться на беглый взгляд, садистски искореженные и звучно хрустящие, тяжело вибрирующие, леденящие или бреющие до огненного кожного раздражения долбежные биты стабильно разбавляются бездушными индустриальными звуками, слаженными механическими скрежетами и урчаниями, однажды раздираются неожиданными женскими вскриками и пару раз улыбают старомодными техно-звучками, которые еще должны помнить поклонники ранних PRODIGY. Вторая часть альбома короче и более шумная, мрачная и экспериментальная. Фактически, это две последние вещи, над которыми музыканты трудились вместе. Можно сказать, что альбом "We Are Deaf" по максимуму заряжен разрушительной энергией, но при этом его суровое звучание нельзя без колебаний назвать оригинальным или прогрессивным. Оно среднее. Качественное. Иногда вдохновенное. Местами скучное. Конечно же, три-четыре потенциальных убойных клубных боевика на диске припасены. В первую очередь хочу отметить композиции DETUNE-X "Toolsuck", "My Beauriful Doll" и ремиксы XOTOX на них же. Мне кажется, что DJ-ям, работающим исключительно с угарным и ядреным техноидным нойзом, этот материал должен понравиться. На большом звуке публика под эти треки будет близка к полному физическому истощению. Атмосфернее и чуть "спокойнее" звучат в первой части вещи "Please Don't Encourage Me Anymore" и "Remix Of Grenoiille Mechanique", но в своем базисе это все равно ритмический материал. Чистого дарк эмбиента на базе текстурного нойза на альбоме нет. Поэтому целиком работа германо-итальянского дуэта может прийтись по душе закоренелым нойзфрикам и прочим околоиндустриальным вудупипл, которые ценят качественное, осмысленное, шумное и жесткое, подвывающее и лязгающее дистортированное техно-индустриальное звучание и любят на досуге поизмываться над собой и соседями. Вполне себе зачетный релиз в экстремальном клубном нойз-жанре. [8 баллов]

Andreas Davids e Stefano Rossello , rispettivamente menti pensanti di Xotox e DetuneX , hanno deciso di incrociare le loro strade attraverso questo “ We are a Deaf “ . Quel che ne esce fuori è una mitragliata di musica impazzita e violenta che si lascia andare in una tensione epica a tratti disarmante . L'ascoltatore viene inghiottito in voragini di puro hardcore “ come Cristo comanda” e da deflagranti loop di puro stampo “tribal-noise” che divorano la speranza e devastano completamente lo scenario “post-bellico” sui cui è stato costruito il concept. La desolazione post nucleare ,creata dalle due menti pensanti ,risulta essere articolata e molto complessa ,muovendosi attraverso severe costruzioni geometriche , “pandemonici “ grovigli di chitarre ed improvvise epifanie melodiche. “Grenouille Mecanique” e “Toolsuck” sono due piccoli microcosmi di musica estatica posti in perfetta collisione. Pulsante e concentrica , la prima traccia , celebrale ed “intrippante” la seconda. Con queste due tracce il disco si lascia deformare e deviare attraverso buone iniezioni di “cattiveria musicale” gratuita riuscendo nell'impresa di produrre un disegno ritmico che si sovrappone continuamente. Xotox e Detune-x , gridano , si nascondono e si remixano in vortici industriali apocalittici ,affrontando austere cavalcate strumentali al limite dell'industriale e della techno music. Gli organismi biomeccanici che compongono le tracce fanno di questo “ we are deaf “ un mostro dal metabolismo mutevole capace di dominare la scena attraverso letargici rovi di musica distorta , congiungendo vibrazioni e ritmi indemoniati e deliri siderali psichedelici , come accade per la traccia “Please Don't Encourage Me Anymore” . Le due band , inoltre , con “My Beautiful Doll “ lanciano spasmodiche granate e puri missili terra aria ai dancefloor europei grazie ad una traccia efficace e trascinante costruita attraverso un meccanismo autonomo molto difficile da arrestare. Un disco che riesce a contaminare la sagomata natura futuristica che stiamo vivendo e che si pone in una dimensione ignota in bilico tra follia e delirio totale. La bomba è stata lanciata , qualcuno sarà in grado di detonarla?

Xotox and Detune-X both are back with a split release, which seemed almost like a given that this would happen eventually. ‘We Are Deaf’ is released on the label were normally Detune-X releases their music, Rustblade. Anyone familiar with either project will know what to expect from this release; very hard, stomping and hyperactive industrial, to use some of Xotox own words. Both projects work in the same powernoise style, though they do have their own specific way of creating beats. ‘We Are Deaf’ is a hyperactive onslaught of hard beats with here and there some arpeggiated melodies and samples. It starts of with ‘Grenouille Mechanique’ that begins with a sample from the 2006 remake of ‘The Omen’. After Mia Farrow’s words we get an instant blast of hard beats and noise by Xotox, which doesn’t let up till the song is over. Detune-X continues with a more groovy powernoise track. Xotox creates with ‘Please Don’t Encourage Me Anymore’ a bleak landscape of sounds and slower beats. ‘My Beautifil Doll’ from Detune-X is again more groovy and sounds very nice. With the next four songs they remix each others tracks. The Detune-X remix of ‘Grenouille Mechanique’ is very cool and raw and sounds pretty different from the original. The last two tracks are collaborations between them both and are called ‘D.I.F. Part 1’ and ‘D.I.F. Part 2’, which are jam sessions. The first of the two is a mid-tempo track with some nice distortions. The last is an industrial soundscape. For people who will buy the limited edition box set (199 copies only!) there are three more tracks. The first is a Geistform remix of ‘D.I.F.’, which contains the specific Geistform sounds and is very nice upbeat track. Then we get a Sandblasting remix from ‘Grenouille Mechanique’. This contains the usual beat violence of this project and can really also be labeled as hyperactive industrial, especially nice if you turn up the volume to the highest level. The last song is from Detune-X, ‘When I Open My Eyes’, and has a more experimental structure. With ‘We Are Deaf’ you know what to expect, but if you like both project, you’ll for sure want this in you collection. Though within each track the sounds and structure doesn’t change much, perhaps sometimes bordering on monotony, the tracks aren’t too long and they for sure know how to create efficient songs. So if both projects speak to you, be sure you’ll order a copy!

Was haben "Xotox" und "Detune-X" gemeinsam? Richtig, sie sind fester Bestandteil der psychologischen Folter in geheimen CIA-Camps, aber nicht nur das, denn sie haben sich nun zusammengetan und ihr ohrenbetäubendes Talent in Form eines Albums namens "We Are Deaf" kombiniert. Die mir vorliegende Variante ist auf 799 Stück limitiert, und das Box-Set, welches zusätzlich Remixes von Geistform und Sandblasting, sowie einen weiteren Track von Detune-X enthält, ist nur 199 mal erhältlich.Mit seinem Projekt "Xotox", gegründet 1998, feierte Andreas Davids schon einige DAC-Erfolge. Er selbst beschreibt seinen Stil als "industrial for hyperactive people", zusammengesetzt aus harten Beats, rudimentären Melodien und gelegentlichen Noise-Anleihen. Hinter dem 2004 als Nebenprojekt ins Leben gerufenen "Detune-X" steckt Stefano Rossello, der schon als Frontmann des ebenfalls von ihm initiierten "Bahntier" eine beachtliche Laufbahn vorzuweisen hat. Mit "Detune-X" beteiligte er sich unter anderem am Schlagstrom-Festival und dem Maschinenfest, desweiteren kooperierte er für das Album "Purevil" mit Eric Van Wonterghem, seinerseits bekannt durch Monolith und Sonar. Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn: Wir haben es hier mit zwei Personen zu tun, die wissen, wie man die Dezibel aus den Lautsprechern kitzelt."Xotox" und "Detune-X" wechseln sich in der Tracklist konsequent ab, beide haben jeweils 2 Stücke produziert, die sie dann nochmal gegenseitig remixen. Die letzten beiden Lieder stellen die 2 Teile einer Jam-Session der beiden dar. So werden aus dem Material für 4 Tracks 8 hervorgezaubert, na wenn das kein Paradebeispiel für Effizienz ist. "Xotox" leitet das Album mit "Grenouille Mechanique" ein und liefert ein aggressives, verzerrtes, sowie monotones, Beat-Gewitter und eine, teils kaum zu vernehmende, Synthie-Klangfläche, die eine minimale Melodie hervorbringt. "Toolsuck" ist dagegen geprägt durch punktuellen, harten Bass-Kick und rhythmisches Rauschen. Sofern man hier überhaupt von Melodie sprechen kann, reduziert sie sich auf Schläge in 3 verschiedenen Tonhöhen. "Please Don't Encourage Me Anymore" ist vergleichsweise ruhig, denn im Vordergrund steht ein beunruhigender, nach Gitarren-Feedback klingender Sound, der fast Ambient-Qualität erreicht. Beats werden zu Beginn eher spärlich eingesetzt, sind aber im weiteren Verlauf des Stücks immer präsenter. "My Beautiful Doll" ähnelt "Toolsuck" in der Hinsicht, dass hier auch nicht gerade von Melodie gesprochen werden kann und der Bass-Kick präzise wie ein Uhrwerk durchläuft. Originell klingt dies nicht unbedingt. Im "Toolsuck"-Remix belässt es "Xotox" beim geradlinigen Stampfen, schraubt das verzerrte Rauschen jedoch zurück und überrascht (zumindest mich) im letzten Drittel mit klaren, melodiösen Synthie-Anschlägen, die in dieser Form eher im Lounge-Bereich zu erwarten wären und hier, in Kombination mit dem unerbittlichen Wummern, einen interessanten Effekt entwickeln. Bei "My Beautiful Doll" zeigt er dann eine ähnliche Herangehensweise, indem er das Rauschen und die etwas stressigen Höhen reduziert und den Beat, wie nun gewohnt, durchlaufen lässt. Ähnlich wie bei "Grenouille Mechanique" muss man schon etwas genauer hinhören, um die Melodie im Hintergrund wahrzunehmen. Der "Detune-X"-Remix von "Grenouille Mechanique" erinnert mich etwas an Samba, im Vergleich zum Original strapazieren die Höhen jedoch etwas zu stark die Nerven. Beim "Please Don't Encourage Me Anymore"-Remix fügt er dem Lied eine Art Breakbeat-Rhythmus hinzu, der gut zum erwähnten Feedback passt. Das Zusammenspiel in der Jam-Session kann der Kategorie Rhythmic Noise zugeordnet werden, der zweite Teil lässt den Rhythmus dann hinter sich und widmet sich stärker dem Noise. Live wäre es sicher eine Erfahrung wert, wie der Titel schon sagt: "We Are Deaf" oder wollen es zumindest werden.Kollaborationen zwischen etablierten Größen sind meistens zu begrüßen, bergen sie doch das Potential der Synthese von etwas Neuem, das über über die Eigenschaften der einzelnen Komponenten hinausgeht. Die konkrete Zusammenarbeit auf diesem Album äussert sich für den Hörer jedoch nur in der Jam-Session, die zwar ordentlich kracht, aber mehr auch nicht. In Anbetracht der Beiträge und Remixes schneidet "Xotox" in meinen Augen besser ab und scheint eher ein Gespür für Stimmung und Trance hervorrufende Komposition zu haben. Wer es etwas anstrengender mag, wird mit "Detune-X" aber auch gut bedient sein. Beide lehnen sich hier nicht gerade weit aus dem Fenster und erneuern nur ihre Revier-Markierungen. Freunde von "Chainreactor", "Stahlschlag", "Shnarph!", "Noisuf-X" oder eben den beiden Beteiligten können hiermit vermutlich eine kurzfristige Bedürfnisbefriedigung erreichen.
